Top 5 Spring Break Destinations For 2012

Before you wrap up the semester and have to deal with moving your stuff out of the dorms, you’ll hopefully get the chance to take a week off and visit one of these top spring break locations.

Each year Orbitz.com, releases data on which destinations have the highest number of airfare reservations for the time period between the beginning of March and mid-April.

This data, called the Orbitz Insider Index, reveals that the top 5 destinations for spring break 2012 are:

  1. Orlando
  2. Las Vegas
  3. New York
  4. Ft. Lauderdale
  5. Cancun

Orlando, which earns the number one spot this year, is home to Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, Sea World and numerous other attractions. It is also within an hour’s drive of Busch Gardens Tampa and the Kennedy Space Center. In addition to theme parks, there are numerous water parks in which one can obtain an official spring break tan.

Las Vegas, as always, offers the best bargains in terms of hotel and airfare rates. Sin City occupies the second spot in the Orbitz Index, and it provides countless recreational activities other than gambling. There is a wide variety of entertainment to choose from, such as several Cirque Du Soleil shows, and other shows headlined by famous entertainers. For those that might not think that Las Vegas is the place for college spring breakers, think again. This year Las Vegas is host to MTV’s Spring Break, and the pool parties at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino can be quite raucous and borderline legendary.

New York, the city that never sleeps, comes in at number three on the list. Although it might not be considered a “traditional” spring break destination for the college crowd, it is rapidly gaining popularity. Broadway shows, museums, Central Park, the nearby Jersey shore, and countless restaurants and nightclubs provide for never-ending entertainment choices and experiences.

Ft. Lauderdale earns a spot at number 4 because of the numerous cruise ships that depart from its terminal. Spring Break cruises to the Bahamas and other Caribbean destinations are wildly popular with college students. Ft. Lauderdale is just north of Miami and South Beach, one of the world’s most famous beach attractions. Key West is also a two or three hour scenic drive away.

Cancun rounds out the list in the number 5 position. The craziness and constantly flowing Margaritas at the night clubs are well-known this time of year. For those that prefer a little sanity mixed in with their revelry, Cancun offers pristine white sand beaches, world-class snorkeling, and day trips to nearby Mayan ruins. Cozumel is also just a short ferry ride away.

Each of the top five destinations offers its own unique experiences, but no matter what destination a college spring breaker chooses, a memorable experience is certain. Just make sure to be safe, have fun and make it back to school to finish out the semester!! 🙂

Feel free to post comment about your favorite Spring Break Destinations.
