Tips & Tricks For Your Abroad Experience!

So you’re considering going abroad…

Maybe it’s because a family member or friend recommended it to you, or perhaps it’s something that has always been on your bucket list. Whatever the reason, studying abroad can be a HUGE step in shaping you as a person as well as developing your curricular experiences.
From enhancing your cultural awareness to building a set of skills that will give you a competitive advantage in the job market, studying abroad will certainly change your life. With out a doubt, you will outshine about 85% of the resumes out there (Not to mention awesome memories for the rest of your life to share and use socially and professionally).
In an effort to make the process a bit easier, we created a nice little tips sheet for you. Hopefully this will help eliminate any uncertainties and/or provide some insightful advice on choosing a location. At the very least, we want to help you decide if studying abroad is the right choice for you.

#1: Why Study Abroad?

Whether you’re looking for adventure, cultural awareness or wanting to better your chances with an employer for future employment, studying abroad can be one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever encounter. By the end of it, you’re a bit more well rounded and can use that to your advantage when applying to a job or even when chatting with your friends and family. The best part is that the experience will give you lifelong memories to reflect on that far exceed the typical ‘college’ encounters.

#2:  Get Over Your Fears…

We found that a majority of students who choose not to study abroad were apprehensive about the decision simply because they either: didn’t know enough about the program, the cost was too high, they didn’t want to miss family/friend functions or they watched some silly travel movie about abductions.
As a student, there are plenty of ways to educated yourself about the country you are interested in studying in. From Google and travel blogs to travel books – education is key when it comes to being aware of your surroundings and setting the expectations of the country you’re considering. Financial aid is available to students who want to study abroad. You can learn more about this feature at www.studyabroad.com. Last, but definitely not least, being aware of your surroundings and ‘not accepting invitations or gifts from strangers’ (remember you had this chat with your parents in grade school) is the general rule of thumb.

#3: How To Choose The Right Study Abroad Program…

A few factors come into play when choosing a study abroad program. These are (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Does your home institution approve of your selected destination? Generally, your school will have a list of approved study abroad programs. So, before you get carried away day dreaming – be sure to check your schools options and base it around that.
  • Language barriers. Though English is pretty much a universal language, it can still be an important part of the program elimination process. Depending on where you’re interested in studying abroad, you’ll want to be able to navigate the local sights with little to no hassle. Some programs will even offer for you to be set up with an English speaking host so they can help play interpreter for you throughout your visit.
  • Do you like the Cuisine? It may sound silly, but this can be a huge factor. You may have a food allergy you’re unaware or have already experienced. Whichever it is, testing out the food somewhere local may be in your best interest before selecting the study abroad program.
  • Weather can be another concern for some students. If you enjoy the cooler seasons you may want to look into studying in the UK or northern European countries. If you enjoy humidity and rain, check out the South Asian countries. Regardless, educating yourself about the seasonal differences between your current location and where you’re planning to travel to may come in handy.
