Make The Most Of Your Space – 5 Dorm Room Space Saver Tips

The standard dorm room size is 246 square feet (15×15). Divide that in half and your looking at about 123 feet that you can officially call your own…

Depending on the size and layout,  you have to make the most of your space. The key to maximizing your space is learning how to utilize it with a few important tools. A great place to get ideas is IKEA. Although the prices and style may not be everyone’s cup of tea, taking a walk through their design centers is a great way to see how space can be utilized to its fullest.

If you want to go the alternative route and stick to college gear, we recommend DormCo. They have small to large packages available for college students who are shopping for dorm essentials.  In the interim, check out our favorite space saving dorm room tips…

5 Dorm Room Space Saver Tips

Space Saver Tip #1:

Drawers, shoe racks & multi-tiered hangers are your new best friends. As shown in the picture above and to the right, maximizing your closet space will help secure your bedroom, desk space and walk space. Keeping your stuff tucked into nooks and crannies is a great way to keep your clothes organized and separate items from your roommates stuff. The shelf organizer displayed to the right can be used in lieu of a dresser for clothes, towels or toiletries and even a few books when you don’t need them.

Space Saver Tip #2:

Slap it up on the wall!  Though not a new concept, sticky wall hangers are a great way to keep your most used items in sight when you need to grab them on the go. The peel in stick solution is a multi-purpose, reusable item that won’t damage your dorm walls.  As depicted to the right here, the Stick UM wall sticky holder can be used for your cell phone. However, if you’re not too thrilled about the flat surface stick concept, try the clips. From clips to hangers (depending on the weight of your item), you can hang pretty much anything that needs to be placed for those items that need to be readily available.

Space Saver Tip #3:

Don’t be a lousy dorm guest by having limited seating available for your friends. As seen in the pictures to the left, a couple of our favorites are the moon chair and the bed chair. Moon chairs can fold up and slide under your bed.  If you have a little more room to work with, check out mini-futons. They can seat up to two people as well as a bed in case you have some stragglers left over that need a place to crash. It can be folded up easily and placed in a corner if you want to keep it out of the way and save space. These types of chairs offer comfort and (sigh) seating obviously!

Space Saver Tip #4:

If you haven’t learned how to do your laundry yet, well missy or mister – it’s about time you hop to it. Your parents aren’t going to be in charge of it for much longer. Avoid the dreaded 1980’s styled box hampers and get yourself a space and organizer laundry hamper for your dorm instead. They come in 1, 2, or 3 tier fold-able options. The newer versions are the three tiered aka triple sorter option. Making sorting your laundry bundles (colors, whites, and towels and bedding) easy!

Space Save Tip #5:

Need a bedside table, bookshelf or both? Check this dorm shelf out. It can be set up in under 20 seconds. And if you don’t want it on display for when you have friends in your dorm, it can be folded up and stowed under your bed as if it were never there in the first place. Another option is the Urban Shelf. Made for convenience, it can slide into the side of your bed and hold your alarm clock, phone and any accessories you may need to grab quickly before you head to class.
