Move-Out Help!

With less than 5 weeks to go (unless you’re in Oregon or New Hampshire) you’re probably in the home stretch of your semester. This means… Other than studying your butt off for finals, selecting which of the remaining toga parties you want to go to and making nicey-nice with your professors (in the hopes that it’ll score you some bonus points) – you’ve got limited time to figure out what to do with all of your dorm sh*!…

$H*! being the key word here, that’s not a lot of time….
The good news is, we can help! Whether you’re planning on packing up your stuff and lugging it home with you, storing it for the summer in a close by facility, or planning on selling any of your items before you go, knowing how and what to do with your stuff comes first. Below are some useful tips for each of these possible scenarios.

Lugging Your Stuff Home Tips:

Plastic Drawers –
If you’re storing your items inside the drawers, you’ll want to make sure each drawer is securely shut. Items stored inside your drawers should be packed snugly so they do not shift in transit. Tape down the sides of each of your drawers to prevent them from opening.

Luggage –
If you have limited luggage space, roll up your pants and shirts to maximize it. Be sure to lock or tape your luggage securely so that it does not open during the move.

Rugs –
Roll your rug tightly and tape it securely in at least 3 places. Wrap it in plastic if you would like to keep the dust out.

Lamps –
Remove light bulbs and cover lamp shades with a plastic bag to keep them clean.

Storing Your Stuff For The Summer Tips:

Refrigerator-
Unplug your refrigerator and leave the doors open at least 2 days prior to your selected move out day. This will ensure that your fridge defrosts completely and will help you avoid mold and/or stop water from leaking on your other items. Wrap the cord up and tape it securely behind the coils so that it does not drag or tear. Be sure to secure the drawers and shelves inside as they may shift during the move. If you’re storing your stuff and forget to defrost your fridge – a lot of storage facilities will charge you for having to prep your items for you. So, be sure to do this to avoid any unnecessary fees.

Microwave-
Remove the glass tray from your microwave and pack it securely inside one of your boxes. Use a blanket, towel or bubble wrap to protect it. Tape the microwave shut and then wrap up the cord so it’s snug and not dragging or snagging onto any of your other items.

Bed-
If you brought your own bed to school with you, you’ll need to dissemble it prior to having it stored. Again, if this isn’t done prior to storage, there may be fees involved to have it done for you. The best way to keep your mattress clean is to wrap it in a plastic mattress bag. You can either tape the screws and bolts to the bed frame or pack them in a plastic baggy with other items.

Desks and Furniture-
To avoid damage to your furniture, you can cover the finished surfaces of the item with either plastic or cardboard.  Empty your items and secure all of the drawers and shelves so that they do not open or separate during the move.

Selling Your Stuff To Another Student Tips:

On Campus-
The student life center usually has a board where you can put up items to sell and perhaps a website to list any of your items on. Your best bet may be to ask a few of your Upper Class-men or women who may be moving out of the dorms and into an apartment or house nearby.

Off Campus-
It’s not always the safest bet, but you can put your items up for sale on craigslist and/or other secure sites such as the school boards that work with the school directly like CampusWall
