The Do’s & Don’ts of Thanksgiving Break

thanksgivingbreakblogThanksgiving is just over two weeks away and you know what that means…it’s time to prepare for home. You’re pretty much thinking about what you’re going to do, who you’re going to see and where you’re going to eat. Here are a few do’s and don’t for your trip home…

DO’S…

DO: Spend time with family

This is probably one of the things that you’re most excited to do when you go home. You most likely haven’t seen your parents, siblings or extended family much since you’ve been away so treasure every second of this. Normally you’d be annoyed with how many people your parents have over for Thanksgiving dinner but this year will be different and you’ll be able to embrace the reunion.

DO: Visit your favorite places

That small italian restaurant you used to go to every week with your family or the trail near your house that you used to run with your dog may be on this list. Being away and doing your own thing at school has it perks but it’s nice to be back home and go all of the places that make your home town special to you.

DO: See old friends

Did you and your friends all split up when it came to going away to college? Between classes, jobs, clubs, homework and all of the other stuff you’re busy with, college makes it hard to communicate and keep in touch with old friends.  Use this time to catch up and reconnect. These breaks will give you a chance to see which friendships will continue on throughout the years.

DO: Eat home cooked meals

I’m sure you have been enjoying trying new foods and grubbing on ramen all semester, but being home means HOME COOKED MEALS! What can be more exciting than your mom’s signature mashed potatoes or your favorite dish she makes every single year on your birthday? Take advantage of this one because once Sunday rolls around, it’s back to dorm food.

DO: RELAX!

You’re so busy all the time at school so use this time to put everything on pause. Put your feet up and watch the Macy’s Day Parade or some football with your family this weekend. Everyone deserves a little relaxation and this is the perfect preview of winter break for you. Just make sure you get all of your work done before you leave for home so that you aren’t frantic when you come back to school.

DON’TS…

DON’T: Hold grudges

So you saw that girl you hated in highschool while you were picking up the pumpkin pie for your mom. You’re both older and more mature now. Let that holiday spirit kick in and give her a friendly hello. Whatever happened in high school probably isn’t as big of a deal now that you’re thinking about it anyways.

DON’T: See your ex

Old habits die hard so it’s best to avoid that ex boyfriend or girlfriend that you always go back to. You’re at school surrounded by so many new people and experiencing new things. The on and off thing is soooo high school. Maybe it’s time to leave the past in the past.

DON’T: Fight with your parents

They’re so excited to have you home, cook for you and probably even do your laundry (SCORE!) so go easy on them. It may be a little weird being home at first and seeing that things have changed but they’re probably feeling that weirdness too.  Spend quality time with them so you can reconnect.

DON’T: Assume everything will be the same with friends

You’re so excited to see all of your old friends but don’t be surprised if things are a little different than last time you were home. You’ve changed and grown since you have been at school, and so have your friends. Embrace one another’s changes and let your friendship evolve.
